Starting with the same drawing as yesterday’s painting, I decided to give this image another spin- this time I changed the background to a sunset sky, and made a few minor adjustments to the face.

Day #3 of working on watercolors inspired by Elvgren’s painting “Smoke Screen…”
This time I changed almost all of the colors, and made adjustments to the face again.
Which version is your favorite? :-)
A quick sketch of a design I’ve been thinking about for awhile…
I’m completely obsessed with vintage fruit designs- fabrics, jewelry, kitchenware, etc… Stick around and you’ll be seeing more of it!! ;-)
Ah weekend!
After sleeping in (but not really, STUPID DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME!), I spent most of the day working on my oil Reproduction of Elvgren’s painting:
“Thinking of You (Retirement Plan), 1962”
The key for me today was experimenting with some new paint colors. Because, after changing up my color palette, the first line of business was to warm up all the skin tones.
After that, I bounced around the painting- a little work here, and little there, but ultimately decided to spend most of my time focused on the legs. Using my fan brush, I got everything pretty smooth, with the colors and tones fading nicely in to each other.
I’m sure I won’t have the time to work on this painting again ‘till next weekend, so that’s it for now!
Stay tuned right here, to see more in the weeks to come!

Here’s another image from my recent shoot with Trent Sherrill on February 26th.
The adorable shoes are from my collection (I bought ‘em from Pinup Girl Clothing), but Trent provided the rest of the wardrobe for this shot… And let me tell you: I have GOT to get my hands on a pair of those “Deadly Dames Cigarette Pants!” I always have trouble finding pants that fit me right, but these fit like a DREAM! <3 <3 <3

Betsy Rewind…
A couple years back I spent my summer working on an independent film called “Pinching Penny.” While I did work on a variety of areas of the film, the thing I was the most excited about (and the thing I’m the proudest of) is what I called “The Penny Queen,” from the “Dream Sequence.”
When I was told that I needed to make a costume for “a fantasy woman wearing nothing but money,” my creative mind took off immediately. As a designer with a lot of musical theatre experience, and a passion for pinups and burlesque, you can imagine why!
Here are a few pictures of my “Penny Queen” costume. The costume, wig/headpeice and makeup were designed and created entirely by yours truly, and worn by the lovely Brianna Lucas.
The whole thing consisted of:
A pile of hand-dyed oversized $100 bills,
3 hand-made polymer clay oversized pennies,
300+ plastic pennies (drilled, painted, copper-leafed),
Pink, purple, black, and white synthetic hair,
Various upholstery trims and ribbons,
A large styrofoam ball,
A pile of Tulle.
Now, as pleased as I am with how that costume came out, I think designers always feel a pull to build off of -and improve upon- their past designs… So, in the coming weeks when you see me working on my “Treasure Chest Mermaid” costume, you’ll know where I’m coming from! ;-)
So -as of right now- I think this is the direction that I want to go in with my “Treasure Chest Mermaid” costume. I want to tweak a few elements of course, but mostly I really like the ideas here…
Gold Pirate’s Treasure Coins
Plastic Crustaceans (crabs and lobsters)
A Treasure Chest Handbag
And a Blonde Wig *with victory rolls, and a white “fish net” snood!*
I went ahead and bought a pile of these gold coins from Century Novelty:

So you’ll be seeing how I work with them in the days/weeks to come! :-)
I feel like it’s been awhile since I sat down and did some serious painting…. so I dedicated this morning to correcting the “nightgown” portion of my Gil Elvgren Reproduction painting.
The first time I worked on this piece, I left the nightgown very light and very loose. Then, when I went back in to refine it, I got lost in the folds (with their subtle variations of tone and color)… In short, it was making me CRAZY.
Today I started out by carefully studying the Elvgren original, and sketching in some of the bigger shapes with charcoal. Then I got in there and focused on getting the main tones of the folds in. Next time I work on this piece I’ll soften things up, tweak the colors, and work on that Elvgren subtlety! :-)
Today I reworked my recent strawberry earring design.
I wanted the new version(s) to be lighter in weight, so instead I used little hearts for the strawberries <3
If you’re interested in purchasing them, I made 2 pairs of each design, which are for sale in my Etsy Shop!
Wouldn’t they be cute to wear to a picnic or BBQ?
