I decided to give my crayons a break, and switched over to watercolors for a bit.
Using another Elvgren (Oil) Painting as a reference, I wanted to create as faithful of a reproduction as possible… with a different medium!
First I worked out the sketch in my sketchbook, then I transferred the drawing over to watercolor paper, and lastly I painted her in!
Watercolors are fun because you can finish a painting quickly, and you can get some really pretty effects… However, it’s a lot harder to take risks when you know you can’t erase or paint over your mistakes!

Starting with the same drawing as yesterday’s painting, I decided to give this image another spin- this time I changed the background to a sunset sky, and made a few minor adjustments to the face.

Day #3 of working on watercolors inspired by Elvgren’s painting “Smoke Screen…”
This time I changed almost all of the colors, and made adjustments to the face again.
Which version is your favorite? :-)
Recently a 7 year old asked me: “Miss Betsy, what does a mermaid eat?”
After only a moments hesitation, I answered with conviction: “Sushi.”
Right then and there -amid the laughter of small children- I silently decided that I would make a series of paintings: Pinup Mermaids Eating Sushi
:-)
Here’s the first rough sketch. I used a painting by Ted Withers for inspiration on the pose.
Pinups (in paintings) always have these amazingly graceful looking hands, but then you look closer and realize how weirdly contorted they are. Here are some studies I worked on tonight.
I also did a little watercolor of a pinup in her undies today! ;-)
I used my Winsor & Newton travel WC set, and an 8x10” sheet of Arches WC paper.
I spent a few hours today unwinding and finishing last night’s pinup drawing. These ”Lyra Color Giant” Colored pencils are so smoooooth, I think I’m in love! ;-)
